Campus Not a Drop Hotel

The world of education often get the charges did not present the reality of life, so that its graduates to be 'dead' style when the time came down the mountain. Colleges often get labeled 'ivory tower'. This sentence describes the reality on campus away with the realities of life outside the campus. Experience as a teacher at two private campus Jakarta gave me the understanding that a little 'different' and demonstrates another label on top. Labels are then seemed to 'excuse' the people of Indonesia, reveals the customs issue if it was not called 'culture' we are more crucial.
'Is there anything we learned in class everyday use?' Are there benefits of studying philosophy at work? Is the job interview will be asked Socrates thinking? Are the theories and scientific journals that can be used later when negotiating with clients or attract consumers? There are many jokes and sad at the same time cynical statements that are familiar in everyday conversation. We can meet in the cafeteria of the campus to the office. The answer is: NO.
The campus is a reality

Until I had asked the students to remember the scenes in Hollywood movies that impressed 'rah-rah'. In the scene of a school or college students or students with colorful appearance (from funky - sexy) still carrying stacked books in his hands.
If the student with the cartoon depicts expression, there is a bubble above their heads together, "College is not the same as the later work"; "It's just a theory", etc.. The image is a bit much to be negative encouragement for less serious or no campus life. In fact, college students are the real world, so real that could occupy the major portion of their cognitive development during that time.
The campus is a miniature life that gives students the opportunity to hone academic skills, social interaction and even entrepreneurship. The main soft skills are a college graduate skills to analyze, formulate logical, active communication, cooperation, and even leadership. 'Dialogue' with scientists from around the world through their theories are one of the media honed mind. Reading the textbook, discuss practical issues with the theoretical analysis is to establish a real logical analysis skills.
The appreciation of the high value is appreciation for the efforts of real life in stages, namely learning. In the selection process as assessment center method, interviewer will conduct confirmatory deepening - klarifikatif against those values. This section is often missed fresh-graduate job applicants so little terkaget especially those that really are not truly educated. Majority of the people (students who graduate and his family) to conclude quickly said 'farewell' firmly with education . Like the bridges behind and staring a new life altogether nothing.
Mindset Educator & Campus
There is another excuse that I catch both the institution and college educators. Some of the proclamation which had seemed 'good' for the student who is implicit in the view; "Student semester, yah .. is still as high school, wants fed, still hard to read, especially textbooks. "Or," It's not a student of psychology (for non-psychology students), so do not must have a textbook is .. This view is consistent with the complaint actually low literacy in Indonesia. Some educators also treats a practical source of knowledge, not only because its main discipline, then do not read his handbook. On the other hand, to see the students 'lack of significance' of reading materials in the course. Other meaning, is still required to be a professor audiobook. At the same time, self-learning is being promoted where more faculty positions for the introduction and discussion. Educators should give credence to the lower level students to dissect the book and discussed further in the classroom and outside the classroom. There are other things that still need to be assessed, but it gives one question in my mind about hebohnya national exams in the country. In addition to reading skills above, there are other learning strategies that still seems foreign to the students that teamwork. When asked to form small groups in class to answer so many questions using the textbook, most seem to panic at the number of questions and the time available. This task becomes very stressful and not realistic. In the end they need to be reminded that they are a team of several people. The pattern of cooperation with one beaten about five people of course will take one day to complete five questions, not 25 minutes. Unless they all have read the course material prior to class.
Pattern teamwork with the division of tasks and assignments that seem 'foreign' is a paradox with our collective culture. No wonder the students and the school became very depressed with the national examination materials, if the strategy is still the conventional learning. I dare not generalize all schools in Indonesia, but the suspicion is that needs to be reexamined. Deeper question, what is the understanding of teamwork among students - our students? Is the rest of the leaders and passive followers? Is this what makes students reluctant leader or coordinator class because he was the one who had to work hard, while others stayed accept something wrong?
Assignments material for then each give a presentation be an alternative effective learning. One of the basic competencies in the selection freshgraduate are working on problem solving and planning organizing. How individuals are able to identify problems, prioritize and optimize existing resources (co-workers - work material). This should be the basis of their existing competencies that bears the title graduate.
Another skill that also need attention are writing and presentation. Most jobs require a written report, a written communication either directly terkonsep or reply to e-mails as partners / clients in an intensive cooperation project. Only the mastery of the material that makes a student can further develop presentation skills in the classroom. Lecture material is a reality, a reality-proposals, a company later in the workplace.
